The Many Ways Expressive Arts Inspires Gratitude

In our Expressive Arts Facilitation Skills class this week, we opened with a simple question:

“What are you grateful for about expressive arts?”

The responses were heartfelt and beautifully varied.

We heard gratitude for:

  • Connection — being witnessed, seen, and heard as our full selves.

  • Expression — the many ways creativity helps us articulate what words alone cannot.

  • Growth — the insights, clarity, and personal development that arise through practice.

  • Containment — the way expressive arts holds our life experiences with compassion.

  • Inclusivity — a field where every style, background, and voice has a place.

We also felt deep gratitude for the communities forming around our work—from Sand, Soul & Metaphor to Expressive Writing, Discovery, and Online Open Studio. Each gathering reminds us how meaningful it is to create, reflect, and grow together.

Even a quiet moment on a morning walk—a single leaf on the ground—can spark awe and remind us how creativity deepens our capacity for gratitude. As Brené Brown says, gratitude is closely connected to joy, and creative practice is one beautiful way to cultivate it. You can check out an interview here.

This week, we invite you into your own exploration of gratitude:

🎨 Create an image
📝 Write a poem or list
💃 Move your body
🍂 Spend time with something in nature

Let gratitude take shape in whatever way feels true for you.

We’re grateful for you, your presence in this community, and the creative path we share.
